What To Do When Your Furnace Pilot Light Goes Out

Pilot lights go out now and then, which should not be a reason to panic unless it is not relighting. If the pilot light is going out repeatedly, something is not right! Knowing how to relight pilot light is not rocket science, and as a homeowner, it is a vital skill to have!

Usually, the instructions are printed on the access panel of the furnace. However, we advise taking the help of a professional for the installation, maintenance, and furnace repair in Corpus Christi, TX. In this blog, we will discuss how to fix your pilot light.

What is The Function of Pilot Light?

What exactly is a pilot light? The pilot light ignites the natural gas pushed into the main burner. When your furnace is working, gas is discharged through a valve. It is ignited when gas comes in contact with the pilot light.

Natural gas is also used to power the pilot light, which comes from a little tube in your gas line. This tube has a safety valve that shuts off the gas flow if the pilot light goes out. This keeps gas from accumulating in your furnace and poses a safety risk.

What Should You Do When Your Furnace’s Pilot Light Goes Out?

Here’s what you need to do if the pilot light of your furnace goes out:

  • Step1: Switch off your furnace

Never make any changes in your furnace while it’s still running. It can pose a safety hazard.

  • Step 2: Find your gas valve

Gas valves usually have three modes you can set them on: on, off, and pilot. Toggle the knob to the ‘pilot’ position.

  • Step 3: Keep the red button touched

The red button should be kept near your gas valve. It ignites your pilot light by pushing gas into it. Depending on the model, the pilot light on your furnace will either be automated or manual.

  • Step 4: Turn on the pilot light

Light it cautiously while keeping the red button pressed down if it is a manual pilot light. Push the red button down for another 60 seconds.

  • Step 5: Release the red button

Release the button with care. Your pilot light should remain lit at all times. If that is not the case, call a specialist as soon as possible to see what is wrong.

  • Step 6: Restart your gas

Return the gas valve to the ‘on’ position. Your pilot light won’t stay ignited if you miss doing this.

  • Step 7: Turn on your furnace again

If you have done anything to get to your pilot light, please remember to turn it off.

If furnace repair and maintenance are not done properly, harmful gases like carbon monoxide can be leaked into your house. Call an expert if you don’t know how to do it properly.
